About
Rhone-Alpes
| Home to the Alps, this is a region flagged by its mountain peaks where mountain pursuits and winter sports dominate the activity list. The Rhone river which carves through the area was created by a former glacier originating from the Alps. Although the region is typically defined by its mountains, departments such as the Southern Drome are more like Provence. It is the Drome where you will find those beautiful French postcards of the purple lavender fields. As well the Drome offers an abundance of detached stone properties unlike its neighbour Provence. Actvities on offer are numerous including skiing, rafting, hiking, hang gliding, fishing & hunting, mountain biking through to cycling. The scenery is stunning from snow capped mountain peaks, lush green valleys, rolling hills, vineyards, olive trees to sun drenched lavender fields. Skiing in the region is arguably the best in the world. The Savoie department offers famous resorts such as Tignes, Val dIsre, Meribel, Courcheval, Val Thorens and Les Arcs. The Haute Savoie offers famous resorts such as Morzine and Chamonix. Climate in the area is good. The snow will begin to cover the mountains in November and remain through to April. Rainfall in the area is relatively low along with great summers. The higher ground will offer slightly cooler summer temperatures whereas the lower ground will be hot. Access to the area is superb. Airports include Geneva, Lyons, Grenoble and Chambery. Fast trains also run into Geneva, Lyons and Grenoble as well as into some smaller stations along with some of the key ski destinations. |
